About The Work

Im Sunny’s ‘STILL UNSTILL’ series reinterprets the human psyche—its obsessions and dualities—through a contemporary lens of vanitas still life. Using everyday objects such as flowers, fruits, ceramics, and lamps as symbolic devices, the artist constructs psychological landscapes where beauty and transience, desire and anxiety intertwine. Though the objects in her paintings appear calm and motionless, an undercurrent of tension and instability runs beneath their order.
 
The state of being “still yet unstill” metaphorically reflects the imperfection and inner contradiction of human existence. Through this paradox, the artist exposes the unease and fragility hidden behind the illusion of perfection. Formally, she merges the classical composition of vanitas with modern sensibilities of color and light, breathing new vitality into the traditional genre of still life.
 
Ultimately, this series invites contemplation on the coexistence of serenity and disturbance, beauty and unease, reality and ideal within the human condition.
