About The Work
IM SUNNY continues to explore the essence
of flatness through a meta-approach to painting. She seeks to reveal the
inherent properties of the painting medium, particularly through color and
brushstrokes. She prioritizes the role of formative elements like brushstrokes,
color, form, and composition over the depiction of the subject. While borrowing
representational imagery, the artist does not objectify it, instead
establishing a "painting about painting." This approach appropriates
Western painting's idiom while incorporating personal perspective and
interpretation.
Her flatness extends beyond a simple flat
surface to a space of thin, subtle layers constructed through gradual changes
in color. Because color folds and overlaps without outlines or shadows, form
and color maintain an organic balance, rather than being subordinate to one
another.
This can be interpreted as a rejection of
the illusory space of traditional painting, based on perspective and
perspective, and an attempt to foreground the inherent logic of painting. As a
result, the artist explores the complex aesthetic possibilities that
contemporary painting can have through a reinterpretation of flatness.
