Artist's Note

My work begins with the question, "What is the essence of painting?" and leads to a contemplation of flatness, a perennial shackle of painting. The theme of my work is how to view the issue of flatness, which has persisted since the modernist era, from a 21st-century perspective.
 
Rather than creating works to convey the content within a painting, I focus on visual formative elements like color, line, and composition, as well as the essential elements of painting, such as change, balance, and unity. Through the process of selection, composition, and shaping, I highlight the pure elements of painting. I sometimes modify shapes and colors to create a composition, and sometimes express them with rough brushstrokes. I maintain the nuances of abstraction while maintaining the subject matter as much as possible.

In my work, depth refers not to the depth of space, but rather to the space between the painting's surfaces. Color is used to create the sense of depth within the painting itself. Its role is not simply to express the color of the object, but also to maintain the overall unity of the painting. Rather than using outlines or shadows, he expresses form through subtle gradations of color and uses color more effectively than line to solidify the form.
 
I seek to reveal the depth of the subject by revealing its content and essence, rather than simply showing its form or external appearance. In doing so, he explores the expressive potential of formative elements.
